Ravens Trying to Hang Onto Ryan

                                 Rex Ryan

Now that the Baltimore Ravens have hired their head coach (John Harbaugh), their next order of business is trying to retain current defensive coordinator Rex Ryan; it is without a doubt that they will have their work cut out for them.  There are some positives and negatives in the Ravens attempt to retain Ryan:

  • Compatability.  Ryan and newly hired team head coach Harbaugh have a good rapport; both worked together in 1996 at the University of Cincinnati where Harbaugh was the assistant head coach and Ryan was the defensive coordinator.
  • Ryan’s a candidate for other coaching positions.  Ryan is still a candidate for the Atlanta Falcons’ head coaching position, having been interviewed twice by team owner Arthur Blank; however, he’s not a shoo-in, as Falcons’ general manager Tom Dimitroff says that he’s broadening the search.  Ryan also has options to possibly be a defensive coordinator elsewhere; the Miami Dolphins have an interest as they interviewed Ryan for the head coaching position that went to Tony Sparano.  The New York Jets may be a possibility, as well.
  • Compensation issues.  In order to keep Ryan, the Ravens may have to bump up his pay appreciably as he is entering the final year of a 2-year deal.  Oddly enough, despite being fired by the Ravens, Ryan remains under contract for next season.

Things could get tricky here; while he is popular with the players, I think Ryan has had his fill of the Ravens to the point where he will find employment elsewhere.  I’m of the opinion that Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and general manager Ozzie Newsome dropped the ball on this one.

Ron Rivera and Dom Capers are both in the running for DC, if Rex Ryan chooses to go elsewhere. Rex has been great, but I think he can be replaced.
