I’ve been scanning all sorts of media to get as much Ravens information as I can before the huge Divisional playoff game this Saturday. Although I’m sure that I’m a little too much on Purple overload right now. I can’t help but wonder why some questions are asked or taled or even written about while others sit there begging to be asked.
So after smashing my hands on the dashboard driving home from work as I listened to yet another inane round of questions and comments on Sports talk radio. I suddendly remembered that I write a blog. So here is my attempt to fix the media. Listen Closely.
Question 1#: Is the Ravens 2008 Defense just as good as the Ravens 2000 Defense?
A stupid question. One, it’s too early to make those comparisons as the playoffs are still going on.
Second, the defense of that glorious Super Bowl run was special for several reasons. They hold the record for points allowed during a season (165) and fewest rushing yards allowed (970) and pitched 4 shutouts during the regular season. They also had to contend with the touchdown drought of 2000 led by the fantastically inept Tony Banks. Banks who often possessed the skills of the Genesis keyboardist of the same name during that run was then replaced by current ESPN talking head Trent Dilfer. I still have nightmares recalling Banks under center as he would often fumble the exchange or just trip over his own feet as he dropped back. His crowning achievement was throwing an interception from the 1 yard line against the Redskins in a 10-3 loss at FedEx Field, while Jamal Lewis apparently couldn’t have simply fallen across the line to paydirt. The offense was only slightly better under Dilfer but more on that another time.
The same goes for any other team that is compared to that defense. Troy Aikman tried it with the 2008 Steelers not too long ago. I have great respect for the D from the ‘Burg but same applies from above. If they get to the Bowl and win, let’s talk, otherwise not so fast my friend.
Now, if you want to say that this defense is the best since the 2000 team then that is a discussion worth having. But the short answer is NO. So please stop asking.
Question #2: Are the Ravens concerned about Rex Ryan’s job status going into this Saturday?
I have a better question; could Rex Ryan leave the staff this week to take a new head job? No. So why would anyone worry about it now? Ryan isn’t Jim Fassel. He’s much larger of course but he’ll focus all his attention on getting ready and when the season is over he’ll explore his options. This is a much better question in a few weeks.
Question #3: Joe Flacco, Do you hope to play better than your first meeting against Tennesse?
I’m not making this up. I listened to the media press conference feed on the radio. What is he honestly going to say? No, I hope to surpass my boneheaded two interception performance with something even more, shall we say Pennington-like. Maybe throw for 250 but get picked five times? Sure we always look at the past to predict the future but asking this question is akin to asking an Olympic swimmer who just came in second, “How do you feel right now?”
That’s all the media watchdog banter I can muster for now. Purple Friday is coming and so are the Ravens.
