Season in Review

The 2008 season is history and although the disappointment of another Super Bowl trip lingers slightly I really want to look back at how much fun it was to be a fan of the Ravens this time around.

This was a year of many firsts, a new head coach, a new quarterback who looks like he will stick around and my first season as a a blogger, columnist and now site editor for my favorite team.

I’d like to make a few comparisons and see just how I did. I will use my pre-season post, my preview post and then the actual game to mark just how well I know or didn’t know the Baltimore Ravens.

There isn’t a harsher critic of myself than me.

WEEK 1: BENGALS @ RAVENS
Pre-season: WIN
Preview : WIN (17-14)
Actual : WIN (17-10)

I’m out of the gate quickly. The Bungles were back in full form. Flacco showed he could gallop. The team got tricky and the old defense came to play.

WEEK 2: RAVENS @ TEXANS
WASHOUT
*I did make mention that the Ravens getting their BYE here might affect them later in the season. Not a huge stretch I know. In fact the thrived late in the season but it may have been an issue for them in the playoffs. Eh, who knew?

WEEK 3: BROWNS @ RAVENS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: WIN (21-13)
Actual: WIN (28-10)

What? Two wins in a row. The Browns sputtered early and Romeo was back on the hot seat fast. Anderson was tossing picks to anyone in purple. The run game just pounded away. Reed was ballhawking. Landry’s injury was serious.

WEEK 4: RAVENS @ STEELERS (MNF)
Pre-Seasons: LOSS
Preview: LOSS (17-13)
Actual : LOSS (23-20) OT

The game went into overtime and Flacco didn’t wilt under the bright lights. Costly penalties hurt and turnovers changed the momentum. Reed kicks the FG in OT.

WEEK 5: TITANS @ RAVENS
Pre-Season: WIN
Preview: LOSS (23-17)
Actual: LOSS (13-10)

Vince Young out. Kerry Collins in. Lots of penalties on both sides. Flacco proves mortal. Slash and Dash grounded. Suggs phantom foul. Collins to Crumpler.

WEEK 6: RAVENS @ COLTS
Pre-Season: LOSS
Preview: LOSS (21-13)
Actual: LOSS (31-3)

Over before it started. Peyton had his way and it was off to the races on the Indy turf. Three game losing streak. Crossroads.

WEEK 7: RAVENS @ DOLPHINS
Pre-season: WIN
Preview: WIN (23-16)
Actual: WIN 27-13

Strong showing down south. Suggs pick 6? Miami fans don’t like me very much on comment board for being so right.

WEEK 8: RAIDERS @ RAVENS
Pre-season: WIN
Preview: WIN 23-10
Actual: WIN 29-10

Gaining momentum against the lesser foe. Smith to Flacco???? Ravens have their way at home.

WEEK 9: RAVENS @ BROWNS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: WIN (23-20)
Actual: WIN (37-27)

Flacco leads the troops back from 14 down. Rice is nice. Suggs picks 6 again. Huge road win. Brady Quinn’s name heard repeatedly.

WEEK 10: RAVENS @ TEXANS
Pre-Season: LOSS
Preview: WIN (24-13)
Actual: WIN (41-3)

Blowing out lesser teams starts here. Lewis still has a nose for the ball. Momentum building.

WEEK 11: RAVENS @ GIANTS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: LOSS (21-17)
Actual: LOSS (30-10)

The Giants were the best team in the NFL at this point. Beaten on both lines. Jacobs ran wild.

WEEK 12:EAGLES @ RAVENS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: WIN (21-13)
Actual: WIN (36-7)

McNabb benched. Reed runs the distance. Actually a turning point for the Iggles. Turnovers a plenty.

WEEK 13: RAVENS @ BENGALS
Pre-season: WIN
Preview: WIN (24-13)
Actual: WIN (34-3)

In full Bungle mode here. Trickery and Deception.

WEEK 14: REDSKINS @ RAVENS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: WIN (23-14)
Actual: WIN (24-10)

I notice that chose a lot of the same scores. I’m almost right here though. Reed stars under the bright lights as Portis heads to the pine.

WEEK 15: STEELERS @ RAVENS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: WIN (17-13)
Actual: LOSS (13-9)

Controversy. Flacco turns into a pumpkin. North crown goes to the Stillers.

WEEK 16: RAVENS @ COWBOYS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: LOSS (20-13)
Actual: WIN (33-24)

Jerry Jones has no idea how to pick them. I thought this was a kamikaze mission and instead McGahee and McClain rip off two huge runs due to awful tackling. Turn out the lights!

WEEK 17: JAGUARS @ RAVENS
Pre-season: LOSS
Preview: WIN (23-10)
Actual: WIN 27-7

What a difference a year makes. I know they had injuries but how did the Jags fall so fast?

So, here are the finals numbers.
Pre-season (5-11) : Which was about what everyone else had. I may have seen one guy in Dundalk who had them winning 7 but that’s it. Way too many questions going into the season.

Preview: (14-2) : The Steelers and Cowboys were my only stumbling blocks. Not too bad for the first time. I do realize that I picked 23-10 as the score for almost every game. I always hated Math.

Actual: (11-5) Wild Card playoff birth.

Not too shabby. I’ll have some other thoughts on how this season finished off later, as well as what will change in the coming months.
