Anderson Wants to Return

From the Baltimore Sun…

During the past couple of weeks, Ravens right offensive tackle Willie Anderson seemed to be headed the way of veteran cornerbacks Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle.

Thank you for your services, but we’re moving in another direction.

But Anderson said there was a communication problem between the Ravens’ coaching staff and him about whether he was going to retire after last season.

That didn’t seem to concern Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. When Newsome inquired about signing former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Marvel Smith or the New Orleans Saints’ Jon Stinchcomb, he had only one plan in mind.

Hey, I’m always looking to improve this football team,” Newsome said. “At this point, we have no plans to bring in any tackles.”

When asked yesterday whether he heard anything about retirement plans for Anderson, Newsome said no, and added, “but I know there has been some communication with our coaches about Willie’s plan to play lately.”

I know that this situation wasn’t headed for a blowup of Jay Cutler proportions. But, the staff did have to speak with Anderson over the past week to get a clear indication if he was planning on returning.

There must have been some kind of communication gap, as Anderson stated to the press that he had every intention of coming back and believes that he has a few good years left.

Anderson provided a solid veteran presence for the young offensive line, which was a question mark before the season began. Even with injuries to Marshall Yanda and Adam Terry, the offensive line gave up 33 sacks, the second fewest in franchise history.

In his public comments he appears ready for another productive season and maybe has a bit of a chip on his shoulder.

The underlying story is if the team was being dishonest or if they simply miscommunicated to potential free agents about Anderson’s status. Marvel Smith had actually called Anderson and said that the Ravens told him that he was leaving. I understand trying to upgrade but I hope they are dealing with professionals in the correct manner.
