Ravens Add Necessary Pieces

Instead of adding a flashy new receiver the Ravens did the next best thing to help their passing game. They hoped to ensure that Joe Flacco remain upright.

Once Tight End Brandon Pettigrew was off the board and they saw a chance to get the highly athletic Michael Oher (pronounced Oar). They quickly swapped a fifth round pick with New England to get the regarded Tackle as there were concerns that Buffalo may try and jump ahead to claim him.

Drafting Oher helps solve a lingering question on the Baltimore offensive line as prior to the draft Baltimore showed its desire to upgrade at Right Tackle talking with Orlando Pace and Marvel Smith.

With the addition of Oher, who will compete with Willie Anderson for the starting job, that makes the Offensive line a young and strong unit aside from recently added All-Pro vet Matt Birk the average age is below 25. That means a group that can grow with Flacco.

In the second round, the RavensĀ  addressed a need on the opposite side of the line with hybrid end/backer, Paul Kruger out of Utah.

Kruger, who had 10 1/2 sacks and 24 tackles for losses in 26 games in college and is described as having a “high motor” at the position.

He, like Oher has an interesting past that brought him to the NFL.

At 23 years old, Kruger has already survived a stabbing that nearly cost him his life and a car accident that cost him his spleen and a kidney.

In January 2008, he nearly died after a confrontation with a group of gang members left him with slashes to his ribs and abdomen that required 50 staples. In 1999, he lost a kidney at age 13 when a Jeep Wrangler in which he was riding rolled over and landed on him.

But the Ravens felt that he provided plenty of value at his slot in round two and with Trevor Pryce writing screenplays, his time in the pros is winding down. They needed to find a speed rusher to bring the heat.

A pretty solid day overall for Ozzie and company and hopefully a few more pieces to add to a championship caliber team. Not the “sexy” or flashy adds thatĀ  some people hoped for but still they added quality.

  1. E-ROC says:

Jared Cook>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lardarius Webb. There is no way Webb was higher on Ozzie’s draft board than Cook. Hopefully, Clayton and Demetrius Williams continue to grow, but I think the Ravens missed an excellent opportunity to get a serious weapon for Flacco.

  2. We had a good pre-draft interview with Kruger:
