Q&A w/ First Round Pick Michael Oher

Draft Ravens Football
Ole Miss offensive tackle Michael Oher, who was selected with the 23rd pick in the first round by the Baltimore Ravens, told Sporting News’ Bill Eichenberger that he enjoyed every second of his time at Radio City Music Hall in New York, even if he was the last of the prospects on hand to be drafted. Considering the long road he has travelled, from homelessness to the NFL, no one appreciated the experience more.

Q: How does it feel to be joining the Joe Flacco show in Baltimore?

A: It feels great just to be in the NFL. Unbelievable.

Q: Did you think you would have to wait this long, until the 23rd pick, to have your named called?

A: It could have been shorter, but it really doesn’t matter. I got drafted. That’s the most important thing.

Q: Was it starting to feel like you were going to be the Brady Quinn of this draft?

A: Nah. I was excited. I knew I was going to get drafted. Don’t feel sorry for me. As long as I got drafted, I’m good. The people around, the people at home, probably felt like it was forever. But it wasn’t. I was in New York. I knew I was going to get drafted. I knew I was going to walk across the stage. So I’m good.

Q: What do you think of the Ravens?

A: They have a great team, a passionate team, a team that is looking to win the Super Bowl. So I can’t wait to be a part of it.

Q: What’s it going to be like going against their talented defense every day in practice?

A: It’s going to be a lot of fun. They are full speed like I’m full speed. I can’t wait.

Q: Who called to tell you that you were the Ravens’ No. 1 pick?

A: It was (general manager) Ozzie Newsome. It was the best call I ever had. The call kept going in and out. He said they were going to pick me. That’s all I heard and all I needed to know. I just wanted to get off the phone after that.

Q: Considering your life history, you’ve obviously come a long way. Have you taken the time to think about how you got here?

A: I’ve thought about it about a thousand times since I’ve been in New York. It’s definitely been a tough and long road for me, but I’ve overcome a lot and I’m here today.

Q: What do you think was the key in getting you from there to here?

A: The key? Just a lot of hard work and dedication. I set my goals extremely high, and I made it.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in going to play for the Ravens?

A: Just being a part of an NFL team. The Ravens, they have a great tradition. They have a great offense. They have Joe Flacco. He had a great year last year. And the defense has been unbelievable. I’m looking forward to competing for a Super Bowl.
