Deep Threat Baltimore Needs is Already Here

The Ravens have been busy adding pieces to attempt another run towards the Super Bowl. But the one piece that just about everyone seems to think Baltimore is lacking that they didn’t address is at wide receiver. That one player that can stretch the field and make defenses nervous.

Maybe that’s because they already have a player in their roster who fits that bill.

Demetrius Williams was a 4th round pick for the Ravens in 2006 out of the University of Oregon and he quickly established himself in his rookie season as the slot receiver. In his first full season he caught 22 passes for 396 yards and two touchdowns.

He showed all the physical tools that are needed in a big time player. At 6′ 2″ he has size, he has good speed to get behind the secondary and he has toughness off the line in breaking initial contact.

His one obstacle to NFL greatness has been the injury bug.

In 2007, a high ankle sprain kept him limited to 9 games and then in 2008 after catching a 77 yard bomb against Oakland he was pushed to IR due being bothered since June by a bone spur around his left Achilles’ tendon.

He enters his fourth year in his career. If he can shake the injury problems that have plagued him he can be the go to guy in this offense.

He has the ability to get separation, as two of his three career touchdowns are over 70 yards. He has excellent hands and isn’t afraid to go over the middle. His nickname back at Oregon was “Spiderman” due to his athleticism and sticky fingers. All he needs is time. Time to gel with franchise quarterback Joe Flacco and all those deep bombs will have a home.

He just needs to get healthy and get on the field. If that happens, Baltimore may already have the missing piece it needs.

Demetrius Williams is coming back from an Achilles tendon tear. I doubt he stays healthy. I didn’t think the Ravens needed a deep threat, but a player that can cause match-up problems like Jared Cook. Hopefully, Williams will be able to comeback healthy from that serious injury.

I’m really hoping he can rebound. He’s only played a full season once in his career and I feel he’s a tremendous talent.

If healthy he’s the missing piece that fans talk about so much. But time will tell if he can stay on the field.
