He’s Back!

This just in courtesy of the Baltimore Sun:

Derrick Mason will end his retirement and return to the Ravens, the team’s No. 1 wide receiver said Saturday.

According to the Ravens, he is sending a letter to the NFL stating his intention to return to the team. He is expected to be on the field Sunday, the third day of full-team practices.

“It was a tough decision, but I think it was a good decision for me to come back,” Mason said in a statement released by the team. “I needed to evaluate my life, football and my career. The last several weeks thinking about it and talking with my family was an important time for me and them.

“I still have an intense fire inside me, and I want to play. My family and I wanted to finish it out the right way. I felt like I had left something undone, and I wanted to finish it. I believe this is a good example for my son and my daughter on how to be thoughtful and also follow through.”

Mason surprisingly announced his retirement July 13. It is believed that family issues prompted his abrupt decision.

After gathering all the intel on this situation I felt that he’d be back sometime in late August. His retirment was a combination or the injury, training camp, the Steve McNair situation, and some family matters. So the news doesn’t surprise me but the timing does.

The only real question will be how healthy he is and how his shoulder will respond in practice. If so, the Ravens have to be considered a legitimate threat in the AFC.

Yes, it is good news that he is back, and I agree, the Ravens will definitely be a legitimate threat in the AFC. However, some fans (myself included) thought the team needed a game-breaking, playmaking type of receiver in addition to what the team already has. While they did not pick one up via the draft or free agency or trade, we are still concerned. Hopefully Demetrius Williams is that guy. Early reports make it sound like he could possibly fill that role.

  2. I agree 100% with you. For years the team has needed a player that scares defenses. It was important for Mason to come back because the team wasn’t going to be able to add a player of his caliber at this stage. The trades for Marshall and Boldin are too costly now. I do wonder if the Broncos price drops if Marshall continues to cause any trouble. By the way no one is reporting that he came to camp on time. He’d be a game-changer if they could get him. DWill has bulked up a bit, if he’s healthy he’ll be an asset.
