News and Notes From Camp: Harper Turning Heads

harper

The past few days the biggest news at Training Camp that didn’t deal with Snoop Dogg has been the sticky weather. I had just mentioned to a friend of mine the other day that this has been an unusually mild Summer in Baltimore, of course I spoke too soon.

Luckily there have been no heat related illnesses to speak of from the players and it seems like the staff has been smart in trying to be cautious with some players in dealing with injuries.

I do have a few notes to discuss as the team prepares for its first pre-season game this Thursday against Washington.

  • Justin Harper is catching a lot of buzz as a well as passes to make the team as the 5th receiver.  He’s been very fluid in route running and seems to get behind anyone who’s trying to cover him. The second year man out of Virginia Tech has good size and is making big plays every day. He’ll be one to watch on Thursday.
  • Another second year player having an impressive camp is running back Jalen Parmele, he shown good speed and an ability to get to the edge. The coaches feel he should perform well in the pre-season and should be able shed tackles as well.
  • Terrell Suggs who has been out with a strained heel most likely will not suit up this Thursday. The protective boot is off but initially everyone was shaking off this injury, but there may be more to this than meets the eye.
  • There has been talk that Joe Flacco hasn’t had the best camp but Offensive guru Cam Cameron addressed that recently. ” I’d be concerned if he weren’t throwing some interceptions, because now’s the time to test your limits. The only way your quarterback can grow is to try to squeeze some balls in at this time of year to find the limits – find the limits of the receiver, find the limits of the defender, find the limits of your protection. Then, as the season approaches, and obviously it starts to change, but that’s… Now, if he’s doing it every snap, which he’s not doing that, [I’d be concerned].”
