Ravens Add Second LB Coach

The Ravens continue to add to their staff. This particular move seems to be specifically aimed at Terrell Suggs. More on that later.

Ted Monachino, who coached Terrell Suggs in college, has been hired to coach the Ravens’ outside linebackers.

Monachino, 43, spent the last four seasons coaching defensive linemen with the Jaguars. From 2000 to 2005 he coached Arizona State’s defensive linemen, including Suggs.

“Ted comes highly recommended from every person we spoke with, and he backed that up while interviewing with us,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “He brings with him an impressive wealth of knowledge and an intense passion for the game. Ted will work with our outside linebackers under Dean Pees, and he will have a tremendous impact on our defense, primarily through the pass rush. We are fortunate to add a coach of his level to our team.”

Monachino’s official title will be outside linebacker’s coach but if you want to be more specific he will dealing with getting to the quarterback.

The Ravens as a team have been middle of the pack for the past three seasons in regards to sacks averaging about 32 a year. This was a rather large dropoff from the 2006 season where they were close to the league best with 60.

There is no question that Baltimore must get better with generating pressure but the improvement needs to start with Suggs who needs to improve his conditioning as well as technique. It’s time for him to pay back the franchise on their considerable investment they put in him. He didn’t get all that money just to stop the run.
