Should the Ravens Get a T.O.?

Bills Owens Football

It’s almost March and I can’t help but get this odd feeling of Deja Vu.

The rookie combines have begun, free agency is around the corner and everyone is trying to figure out how they can make their team better than the season before.

When you scan the Ravens roster the needs should be fairly clear; improve the pass rush, improve the secondary and get some fast/big/skilled receivers to build the burgeoning offense. Sound familiar?

But it’s that one position of receiver that seems to hang over the franchise, much like quarterback used to, like a riddle equivalent to what the island really is on Lost.

So as the Ravens continue to search for the answers the same possibilities seem to crop up but I’d like to address one potential solution that I just can’t seem to embrace.

Terrell Owens.

It was announced yesterday that the Bills would not be offering Owens a contract and that the 37 year old receiver will hit the open market on March 5th. It was almost immediate that I read several articles and even watched video of John Harbaugh proclaiming that the Ravens were interested in his services.

For anyone who has followed this blog you may remember the post or rant that I wrote when the Bills signed the NFL’s problem child to a one-year deal. I was essentially overjoyed that he was someone else’s problem.

Maybe it’s the bit of old school mentality I have instilled in me from my dad that just makes me want to believe that “Play like a Raven” is more than just a marketing tool. I want to get behind the players that wear my team’s laundry and hope that they are good people. I know that’s naive but I can dream can’t I?

I was reminded of that fact as I took in a Wizards game this past Friday and as I looked down on my ticket I saw a picture of noted gunslinger Gilbert Arenas with the words “Character” next to him. How could you not at least smirk at that image?

But sports is a business, I certainly get that and if a team thinks they can sign someone who can help then they will. Look no further than the Orioles recent signing of Congressional liar and B-12 user, Miguel Tejada. He fills a need at third base, he comes relatively cheap and he still has skills. Sign him up. It’s a no brainer.

I guess what bugs me about these moves are that they reek of desperation. Certainly no one is more desperate to get a play maker on the field for Joe Flacco to toss to than Baltimore. So couldn’t you apply the same terms as above to a potential deal for Owens. He’ll sign for a year, he can still play and maybe he’ll keep the seat warm until a few drafted receivers are ready for larger roles. Sounds like the right move on paper.

However does that make it the right move in the long run? You preach commitment, hard work and teamwork and you sign a guy that will openly criticize his teammates and coaches if he doesn’t get enough passes. A guy who spits in opponent’s faces when he gets frustrated and who already spurned Baltimore once in 2004 in one of the franchises most unusual fiascos.

I only wonder if Ozzie would be ready to put all that ill will that Owens spread his way behind him so they can do business for one year?

I wonder how the fans would react to a signing of the reality show superstar considering his recent history?

I just know that I still firmly believe that the Ravens should get a T.O. A time out. They should take a moment and really dissect the risk/reward on signing an aging player who is just looking for his next pay day while they appear ready to let Derrick Mason walk to the Dolphins. Are they really that desperate?

So what do you think? Should the Ravens entertain signing Terrell Owens for 2010?

i think that the ravens are in the good to sign T.O but only because i think he would either make a SLOT receiver or a big play type player next to boldin. He has his problems and so do anyother players in the league. i believe altho that he has said he wanted to play for us and rejected us , that he comes back to want to play for us again. WHY IS THAT?
