Who’s Out – Smith or Beck?

The haze of Summer is finally upon and with it things are normally very quiet around the NFL.

However that hasn’t stopped the Baltimore Ravens from making some noise this past week when they added three veterans to provide the team withdepth and flexibility. I’ll admit that the most surprising addition was Marc Bulger, who agreed to a 1-year deal at about 3.8 million dollars last Wednesday. It’s not that I didn’t think it was a good move I just didn’t think about the need to upgrade the quarterback position. But then again that’s why Ozzie makes the big bucks.

There is no question Bulger is an upgrade over both Troy Smith and John Beck. If Joe Flacco goes down with an injury the Ravens can now  turn the offense over to a two-time former Pro Bowler who is an experienced hand in the NFL.

But where does that leave Smith and Beck? If you think about it the coaching staff told us all we needed to know about what they think about both players last season. Joe Flacco limped through the back end of the regular season with multiple injuries and wasn’t nearly the same player we saw earlier in the year. But there he was taking almost every snap. That should have been a clue as to what Baltimore thought about it’s backups.

We know that the Ravens won’t carry four quarterbacks this season, so who stays to secure the third spot on the depth chart?

All signs would seemingly point to Troy Smith being shown the door.

He’s been somewhat vocal through his agent that he wants a chance to start and reportedly would “crawl to Cleveland” to get his opportunity. So I can’t see him being content at settling into the three spot in Baltimore. The last thing that this team needs as they gear up for a potential Super Bowl season is dissension in the locker room.

At best the Ravens would hope for a 6th round pick for Smith from a team that has quarterback issues and would be willing to part with it. Perhaps Buffalo?

Or would they simply release Smith and allow him to shop himself around the league? You always like to try to get something to a player in return but in this case in may make more sense to cut bait.

But the again maybe it’s John Beck.

If you follow the depth chart he was already third in line. Now that the team has signed Bulger  wouldn’t that make him fourth? Beck did play for Cam Cameron back in his Miami days and is familiar with the offense but he hasn’t done much to distinguish himself as an indispensable player.

Or maybe both men are gone.

If Bulger passes his physical and appears to have plenty left in the tank Baltimore may feel the need to drop both and pick up a cheaper option for the 3rd spot. Honestly most third stringers are inactive on game day anyway so that could be an area to save a few bucks.

So I leave it to you. Who stays and who goes?
