Katula Cut ; Jones Re-Signed

Long snapper Matt Katula has been waived and cornerback Brad Jones has been signed, the Ravens said Saturday.

Katula’s departure means that Morgan Cox, a rookie out of Tennessee, is the only long snapper on the team. Katula, who was bothered by a case of tendinitis last season, was the only Raven not to play in Thursday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

Jones, a rookie free agent from Cincinnati, signed with the Ravens after earlier being cut. The Ravens are thin at cornerback this preseason because of injuries to Lardarius Webb and Domonique Foxworth.

This was somewhat of a surprise as it was assumed that Katula was over the injury issues that he plauged him last season. In the past he has been a fairly solid snapper but last season the injury definitely affected his performance.

Jones re-signing isn’t necessarily a surprise either but you’d have to think that this may just be a move to get another practice body out there since he’s already been cut once.

There is good news on the secondary front as Fabian Washington is now a full participant in practice and Chris Carr is being brought back slowly after some hamstring trouble. Both Cary Williams and Travis Fisher aquitted themsleves well against the Panthers last Thursday night even though I don’t think they were tested by an experienced quarterback..The news is equally promising for Lardarius Webb as the team hopes he might be ready for a return by Week Three. So maybe things are looking up?

I think the Ravens will probably play the waiting game before they make any moves  (trades) on the cornerback front but it bears watching over the next few weeks.
