Next Man Up – Cary Williams

The Ravens received some good news as cornerback Lardarius Webb was activated off the physically-unable-to-perform-listMonday.  Some other good news is the play of cornerback Cary Williams in two pre-season games.

The much used cliche is ‘next man up’ and Cary Williams so far has provided some real help to the secondary.  At corner he’s looked good in coverage, as well as in run support  and came away with an interception in each of the team’s preseason games.  Williams was instrumental in turning the momentum in the team’s second match-up versus the Redskins. Ron Fritz, Baltimore Sun, pointed out, “Just as we were about to write that Donovan McNabb has been picking apart the Ravens’ secondary, the Ravens’ Cary Williams picked off McNabb.”

Another Test

Another test will come in the next pre-season game as Williams faces the NY Giants and a cable quarterback in Eli Manning along with a talented group of receivers.  Obviously, the bad news is that Williams is suspended the first two regular season games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. However, he could be a key as the season progresses and if he steps into the role of a consistent corner it adds insurance to the secondary; a unit who has been hampered with injuries going into the playoffs the past two seasons.

For now Williams adds some much needed stability to the corner position.  While it may be tricky to evaluate if the is ready to be a full time starter based on preseason play, he is off to a great start.

Williams saw playing time in five games last year, starting one game.  “A seventh-round pick in 2008 by Tennesee, Williams was cut three times  by the Titans before signing with the Ravens in late November — after Washington suffered his season-ending knee injury.”

“If Williams keeps this up he won’t be considered a bubble player much longer. The rangy cornerback notched his second interception in as many games. This time he deftly slipped under a route on an underthrown ball to Santana Moss and returned it 37 yards. Williams didn’t get burnt once on the night. His biggest issue right now is that he’s suspended for the first two regular season games.” http://blogs.baltimoreravens.com-bubble-players-who-stepped-up/

Williams didn’t get the start last night; Fabian Washington and Travis Fisher were the two cornerbacks on the field with the first-team defense on the opening drive of the game. But Williams outperformed the veteran Fisher, and with Washington and Chris Carr still coming back from knee and hamstring injuries, respectively, http://another-game-another-interception-for-williams.html

I don’t care who’s playing cornerback, all they need to do is be like “The Expendables”… go in there, kick butt and get the job done!!!
FYI, “The Expendables” have a nice Raven mascot…
