Ravens Gab Awards 2010 – Special Teams

Our final “Official” award goes to the Special Teams. Often an overlooked area within the three phases of football it can be crucial in obtaining a victory.

Once again we were all in agreement on this one.

BILLY CUNDIFF

Jonathan Scruggs had these comments:

This award could have easily been a toss up between Billy and Sam Koch. I gave the award to Billy solely by virtue of the fact that he tied the NFL record for most touchbacks in a season by a kicker. His leg was an immeasurably valuable weapon to the Ravens and gave consistently solid field position to a defense who needed all the help they could get, especially when the offense was struggling. The Ravens rewarded Billy’s consistency with a new five year contract. It was a well earned extension.

I’ll admit I was tempted to give this one to Koch because I already chose Cundiff for Most Improved Raven. However Gene Winner’s comments helped sway me back to the second-year kicker.

Cundiff improved in all areas of his game. But, his record tying kick-off for touchbacks were quite the weapon. One that has been lacking in Baltimore for years.

I hope now that the journeyman has finally found a home that he’ll be able to repeat that level of success for years to come.
