3 Takes: Who to Re-sign? Carr or Wilson

3 Takes: Should the Ravens resign Chris Carr or Josh Wilson?

Optimally, it would be a bonus to sign both Chris Carr and Josh Wilson.  However, with the acquisition of rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith the team may focus their resources in other areas and realistically will only sign one of the two.

We pose the question to our Ravens Gab columnists: “Who should the Ravens resign, Carr or Wilson?”

Matt Jergensen:Player Analyst/Columnist

Many of the so-called experts have called out the Ravens secondary as one of the weak points. I think that some of that is overblown and instead I feel the blame should rest on a subpar pass rush. With the Ravens drafting Jimmy Smith, Domonique Foxworth returning from injury and Lardarius Webb most likely the nickel back Baltimore appears set.

I’d like to have both of them back as both are well-liked and solid players. If I had to guess it may come down to age (Wilson is 26, Carr 28) and who they can get more cheaply. So I’d go with Wilson.

Though after reading this rumor it may send both of them out the door.

Jonathan Scruggs: Legal Analyst/Columnist

I firmly believe that if the Ravens can sign both, then they should if for no other reason than to have an insurance policy in the event Foxworth isn’t 100% coming back from surgery. That being said, if they have to sign only one, I’m going to give the nod to Chris Carr. This is only because he has the kind of heart and never quit motor that the Ravens have long coveted for their elite defensive unit. You don’t always have to be the best guy on the field, but you do have to have the best attitude.

Gene Winner: Draft Analyst/Columnist

Carr had probably one of the most improved season as a Raven. What stood out to me with Carr last year is how aggressive he was in his tackling and  he had 3 forced fumbles.  Josh Wilson took over Fabian Washington’s spot at the corner position and did well. We all remember the game in Houston, the interception for a game winning TD. But, we also remember the play in Atlanta where he gave up a TD.

Carr might be chosen over Josh Wilson because he can cover from the slot and can help in special teams.

Here’s the Stats:

Chris Carr

16 games: 16 games started,

61 combined tackles (7 assists),

8 pass deflections , 2 Interceptions, 3 forced Fumbles

Josh Wilson:

14 games, 9 games started

37 tackles, 3 asst.

14 Pass deflections, 3 Interceptions, 1 TD

The Ravens also consider Carr to have a much higher football IQ then not only Wilson but a lot of players. He doesnt have the natural ability that Wilson has but overall I think is viewed as more valuable as a third or fourth corner then Wilson would be. Wilson is great as a spot starter. There is a difference I think

Good points, it’s hard to compare both players, they play different spots. It be great to resign both.

Josh Wilson is a big play guy that was dishing out some big hits from the corner back position last year…plus he is a TERP with a connection to the area. I like Carr but I think at 26 Wilson has lot more up side.
