Across the Blogs: Best Free agent Signing?

Who is the most important Free Agent the Ravens signed this offseason? In addition to our Ravens Gab contributor we have included a few opinions from around the blogoshere.

Mock Draft Club –

“I’m gonna go with what I would consider an under the radar move and go with the signing of Vonta Leach. It’s unclear exactly how well Bryant McKinnie will be for the team given that Minnesota was clearly frustrated with him and gave up on him. Having Leach on the field is like having a sixth lineman out there and the Ravens clearly must feel that way because they paid pretty hefty money for a fullback (3 years, $11 total). Leach is coming off a Pro Bowl season and you can’t discount how big of a part he played in leading Arian Foster to the rushing crown. He won’t touch the ball much, but Leach will have a big impact on Ray Rice and the running game, particularly in short yardage situations.”

Ravens Blackout –

“If you had asked me this question around a week ago, my answer easily would have been Vonta Leach. Did the Ravens overpay the big fullback? Debatable, but the physicality that Leach brings to the Ravens is enough in my mind to warrant one of the largest contract for a fullback in NFL history. You don’t believe me? Well tell that to LB Brandon Siler who was hit by a truck in Leach a few weeks ago in the Ravens 2nd preseason game. Vonta is big, Vonta is mean, and Vonta loves to block –  if thats not a winning combination for a fullback, I don’t know what is.

But this isn’t a week ago, and now Bryant McKinnie is a Raven. Is McKinnie a huge risk? Yes he is, but in the state that the Ravens line was in a week ago, the reward far outweighs the risk. Who were the Ravens kidding when they kept saying rookie tackle Jah Reid would be ready to start? Patriots castaway Mark LeVoir obviously wasn’t the answer either. Bryant McKinnie, although a ticking, out of shape, time bomb, can solidify the Ravens offensive line. He is a Pro-Bowl caliber player and his arrival pushed Michael Oher back to the right side of the line – a position in which the Blindside star is clearly more comfortable and effective. Even if McKinnie is only a shell of his former self, it is a boost to the Ravens offensive line.

Leach may improve the Ravens running game, but it was increasingly clear throughout the pre-season that if Joe Flacco has time, he can pick apart any defense. McKinnie gives the time that Jah Reid is not ready to give. Bryant McKinnie has changed everything.”

Gene Winner, Columnist

“If you take a look at the many free agents signed by Ozzie Newsome like Vonta Leach, Lee Evans and Bernard Pollard, they are all upgrades–that’s tremendous GM work.  I’m inclined to go with receiver Lee Evans as one of the best signings because he will be a tremendous asset.

However, the Ravens have receivers to fall back on so I’m going out on a limb and saying Ricky Williams. At first many think Williams is past his prime. But, Williams stays in great shape and is motivated. By the way, he is one of the first players at practice and he came into camp in excellent condition. The Ravens may be inclined to actually use Williams more than we think.  We all know Ray Rice will be the production back but the team struggled last year in short yardage and at the goaline. That’s where Williams size, skills and experience come into play.  If Williams can help in relief of Ray Rice along with short yardage and goaline situations, then he will be one of the most important acquisitions this offseason.”

With the Ravens pick-ups…I’d really like to see Ricky do well! He’s been a little controversial in his career, however, I think this is the first time he’s on a legitimate contender! Now, with all due respect to being a great player and team leader in Mason, but Evans is what we need as more of a deep threat! All I can say is Leach is a HARD HITTING BEAST! We just need to limit McKinnie’s crab cake intake and he’ll keep his weight down and be fine addition to the line!
