Ravens Release Carr and Evans

Lee Evans and Chris Carr were both officially released Friday

The Ravens have officially released wide receiver Lee Evans and cornerback Chris Carr, General Manager Ozzie Newsome announced Friday afternoon.

The cuts open up salary cap space and allow the Ravens to pursue desired free agents.

Evans, who the Ravens traded a fourth-round pick for last offseason, was supposed to be a speedy, veteran complement to Anquan Boldin and rookie Torrey Smith.

But an early ankle injury forced Evans out of seven games and he finished the regular season with just four catches for 74 yards.

His lasting legacy may be his drop in the AFC championship. Evans had the potential game-winning catch punched out of his hands with 27 seconds left on the clock in New England.

Evans was reportedly due $3.27 million in base salary for 2012, and was due a $1 million roster bonus in March.

Carr played admirably in starting 16 games in 2010, but was also sidelined for seven games last year by a nagging hamstring injury. Cornerbacks Lardarius Webb, Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith leapfrogged him and made up one of the best defensive backfields in the NFL.

Carr had signed a reported four-year contract before last season, and was reportedly due a $2.5 million base salary and carried a $3.45 million salary-cap figure into next season.

There is always a possibility that both could return with more cap friendly contracts. That seems less likely for Carr as he hopes to pursue a starting job elsehwere. Evan could still be be in the mix as a potential solution for the Ravens need of a third receiver.

There is no word from the organization on the fate of cornerback Domonique Foxworth, who is named in reports among those to be released and currently holds a 7 million dollar salary.
