BGR Mock Draft I

The Baltimore Gridiron Report (BGR) columnists give their early predictions for the Ravens first round pick (29th selection) in the 2012 draft:

Gene Winner selects:

Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama

“Ozzie Newsome has been searching for that linebacker opposite Terrell Suggs the past few years. Upshaw brings all the tools to make the Ravens ‘front 7’ even more dangerous–strong pass rush skills and a nose for the football. If Upshaw is taken early, the team may pull the trigger on ILB Dont’a Hightower. Center will be on the radar too, yet it’s looking like center Matt Birk is coming back for another season and this changes the thinking in this draft. The Ravens could still draft a center or offensive lineman in the mid-rounds or pick up a free agent to fill this need.”

Matt Jergensen selects:

Dont’a Hightower, ILB, Alabama

” Drafting Hightower would be a perfect selection for Baltimore. Not only would he be groomed as the heir to Ray Lewis’ but he should get a chance to start right away with the possible departure of Jameel McClain looming. Hightower is an intense big hitter who’s mindset fits in with the Ravens stingy defense.”

Jonathan Scruggs selects:

Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

“Konz fills the duel role of being the best player available and a glaring need for the Ravens. With Matt Birk in the twilight of his career, a free agent, and not a lock to ever play another down, Konz is a perfect pick to compliment a young, developing, Joe Flacco.”
