The Free Agent List- Who Stays? Who Goes? : Take Two

My hope is that Haruki will stay in purple in 2012

Free agency is set to open tomorrow and while fans might be anxious to see what new players the Ravens could add to finally push them back to the Super Bowl they probably should be more concerned with which are our own players will be retained.

Back in January I gave this list a pretty uninformed try. Most of my choices were filled with gut reactions and speculation. So I figured I’d give it another attempt. Now, I won’t say that my picks don’t still have an element of guesswork to them but we all know more now than we did two months ago in terms of this team.

RB- Ray Rice : (Franchised) Don’t be surprised if a deal can’t be reached that they wouldn’t do it again in 2013 too.

CB-Lardarius Webb : (Restricted) It helps that Webb isn’t unrestricted this season but he’s another player they will need to lock up in a long-term extension and soon.

CB-Cary Williams : (Restricted) Williams played well but could be pushed to nickel with Jimmy Smith likely to get a chance to win the starting job next season.

FS-Haruki Nakamura: (Unrestricted) A valuable reserve and special teams player that undoubtedly wants to play more. I’d love to see him start as the Free Safety but of course Ed Reed is blocking that path for now. I may be hopeful here but I’m interested to see what the market bears for Nakamura in a light Safety class.

LB-Dannell Ellerbee : (Restricted) Last season was injuries and in 2010 it was attitude. There’s always something holding this guy back from really breaking out. I think he’s got some ability and he may have another chance to shine with some linebackers on the way out.

LB Brendon Ayanbadejo : (Unrestricted) He shouldn’t be that expensive and the team could use his leadership for the Special Teams unit that was pretty awful at times in 2011.

C Matt Birk : (Unrestricted) The Ravens can afford to wait on Birk. If they don’t draft a Center Birk will be back for maybe a 1-year contract.

DT Cory Redding : (Unrestricted) I think Redding might give a little in negotiations to stay in Baltimore. After playing for a woeful Lions team for so long he finllay got the playoffs the last two season with the Ravens. He fit in nicely and had a very solid year in 2011.

G Ben Grubbs: (Unrestricted) The franchise tried but they won’t be able to match offers for him.

S Tom Zbikowski  : (Unrestricted) The fact that the Ravens signed Bernard Pollard last season should tell you that Zibby is done.

C Andre Gurode : (Unrestricted) Valuable reserve last season but shouldn’t be back.

LB Jameel McClain: (Unrestricted) Another in a long line of backers who will make huge bank from playing next to #52.

LB Jarret Johnson : (Unrestricted)  I love Double J. But I can’t see him returning. It hurts just saying it.

DT Brandon McKinney : (Unrestricted) They can afford to let him walk.

TE Kris Wilson : (Unrestricted) Maybe he’ll still be available.

LB Edgar Jones : (Unrestricted) They probably re-sign him again in Week Three.
