Reed Dodges Questions About Future; Hints at Possible Holdout

Could Reed Holdout of Camp?

Ed Reed is tough guy to get a bead on and maybe he likes it that way.

This off-season has been an interesting one for the perennial Pro Bowler as his actions suggest a player that either is truly mulling retirement or is seeking one final payday as his career starts to wind down. The problem is that no one really knows what Reed is thinking.

So why go right to the source and ask him?

So Reed appeared on 105.7 The Fan Wednesday night but once again his comments were just as evasive as his is when returning an interception on the field.

He stated that he is “physically prepared to play” his 11th Pro season but insists that he is “thinking things through.” He is scheduled to report to Camp on July 25th but did hint at the possibility of a holdout.

The only way we protect ourselves, ? the only way a player gets what he wants is by holding out,” Reed said. “So if Ray Rice doesn’t show up, so be it. If Joe Flacco didn’t show up and got a contract, so be it.”

Reed acknowledged that he and the Ravens could eventually part ways, but said he “loves” Baltimore.

He was mostly upbeat and talked at length about his youth football camp which will be held Monday and Tuesday at Stevenson University but continued to sidestep questions about his immediate and long-term future as a Raven.

I think the time has come at acknowledge that 2012 will probably be Ed Reed’s last in a Baltimore uniform. Past history would suggest that the Ravens front office won’t buckle to Reed’s antics to gain an extension. Remember this is the same organization that let even Ray Lewis test the free agent waters in 2009.

I’d expect Reed to do the same in 2013.
