Camp Battles : Wide Receiver

Is Jones ready to step up as the Ravens #3?

Baltimore Gridiron Report continues to take a look some of the positions that will be decided over the next few weeks.

Next up – Wide Receiver.

Certainly the first two spots are a given with Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith. Which player you consider to be the number one is up to you? (I’d say Smith, if that even matters) Yet the number three position is one that still might be considered up for grabs.

After letting Lee Evans go this past off-season, there was a lot of speculation about who they would sign to attempt to fill that third receiver position. So when the Ravens signed Jacoby Jones to a two-year $6.5 million dollar contract it helped give the team a speedy return man and a possible answer at the position.

While I like the idea of adding an experienced returner in Jones I don’t think he solves the problem of another capable pass catcher for the Baltimore offense. He’s been dogged throughout his career with a label of having poor hands and so far he’s shown the same in workouts with the Ravens.

Doss had a strong pre-season last year but never seemed to be able to crack the active list on Sundays. He seemed to run crisp routes and displayed strong hands. While Williams impressed as an undrafted free agent, made the team and found time on Special Teams and made a few tough catches when called on. His play-making ability is intriguing to say the least.

So who wins the spot?

I think that it’s Jones to lose t this point but that could change if he doesn’t start holding on to the ball. I wouldn’t mind seeing either second-year player Doss or Williams get the opportunity if Jones falters.
