Camp Battles: Cornerback

Who gets the nod – Smith or Williams?

Baltimore Gridiron Report continues to take a look some of the positions that will be decided over the next few weeks.

Next up – Cornerback

For years, the Secondary (especially the Corners) was seen as the one Achilles heel to the Ravens top ten defense.

Now it may be it’s strongest position.

Lardarius Webb thinks that his guys are even the league’s best. And why shouldn’t he? He’s brimming with confidence after a phenomenal break out season in 2011. He finished the season fourth on the team in tackles (68) and lead the team in interceptions (5). He also did not give up a touchdown to his coverage assignment all season. Baltimore rewarded his play with a hefty contract extension – 6 years – $50 million – $20 guaranteed. So with Webb as the anchor the competition for the starter on the opposite see should be very interesting.

CARY WILLIAMS   vs.  JIMMY SMITH

Cary Williams started every game last season and put up fantastic production for his first season as a full-time starter. He recorded 78 tackles and 18 pass deflections and seemed to have a nose for the football. However he had to have surgery in February to repair a torn labrum in his right hip.

First round pick from 2011, Jimmy Smith was injured Week One against the Steelers and eventually  was able to contribute towards the end of the year as he grabbed two interceptions in the regular season and another in the playoffs against New England. He’s dropped some weight to increase his speed for this season and seems poised to attempt to take over Williams’ spot in the rotation.

I think Smith will eventually win out in camp and take the starting spot with Williams settling in at the Nickel. Really I don’t think it matters much as both should see plenty of time in today’s pass happy NFL.
