“Moneyball” Comes to Baltimore

The Ravens announced Monday of a new hire  to their staff but his job is unlike any other the team has had before. Sandy Weil is the Baltimore Ravens new Director of Football Analytics.

His duties will include using statistical research to examine everything from in-game decisions to NFL Draft strategy. The approach was most popularized in Major League Baseball by the Oakland A’s and was most recently featured in the movie, “Moneyball”.

Weil previously worked for the San Antonio Spurs as a consultant and has written several papers that have been presented  at the M.I.T. Sloan Sports Analytics Conference which span a variety of sports related topics.

Naturally there will be plenty of skeptics towards this new approach but I don’t see the Ravens scrapping everything they’d done over the years in favor of just spreadsheets and numbers. I think this will be a good supplement and should challenge some of the more conventional thinking in the game that may have become antiquated in the modern game.
