Pre-Season Match-up: Baltimore @ Atlanta

Thursday, 8/9/12, 7:30 PM Georgia Dome

2012 NFL Football is already here!  The Ravens travel to Atlanta for their first preseason game.

Falcons Snap-Shot:

Atlanta is a good test for Baltimore. Atlanta has a solid offense with QB Matt Ryan and his receivers along with running back Michael Turner.  The offense drafted Center/guard Peter Konz in the second round of the 2012 draft.  Atlanta had some changes on defense hiring former Ravens coordinator Mike Nolan. The Flacons struggled at times on defense last season, particularly the secondary, ranked 20th in passing yards allowed.  Key loss: The team lost middle linebacker Curtis Lofton to free agency. They signed Lofa Tatupu, but Tatupu had a season ending pectoral injury. Second year player Akeem Dent is expected to start at middle linebacker.

  • Courtney Upshaw: With Suggs out rookie OLB Upshaw will have to fill in.  Keep an eye on his pass rush abilities. OLB Paul Kruger is going to have to step up as well.
  • D-Line: Cody, McPhee, A. Jones and company. The team signed a few seasoned vets too. Let’s see how they play the run and attack the interior of the offensive line.
  • Jimmy Smith:  Cornerback Jimmy Smith is battling as the second CB with Cary Williams.
  • Def. Coordinator Dan Pees: Will Pees be aggressive like former coordinator Chuck Pagano?
  • Sergio Kindle: A remarkable recovery from his accident. Will OLB Kindle be in with the first team defense?

  • #2 Running back: Rookie Bernard Pierce (rookie third rounder) and second year player Anthony Allen.
  • Offensive line: Ravens have some question marks. Depth may be a concern for this unit.
  • Tyrod Taylor: Second year QB will be under some pressure to have the offense in sync.
  • #3 receiver: Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin…then who?  The team likes LaQuan Williams, Tandon Doss and signed Jacoby Jones.

Special Teams:

  • Cundiff vs. Tucker:  All eyes on this battle. The Ravens/fans want Billy Cundiff to get back to his Pro-Bowl form.  Rookie Justin Tucker is having a consistent training camp.
  • Coverage: The Ravens made moves– brought in some experienced veterans in the off-season to bolster their coverage team.
