Ex-Patriot James Ihedigbo Signs with Ravens

Ihedigbo Provides Depth

The Ravens finalized a contract Sunday with former New England Patriots safety James Ihedigbo, a move intended to bolster depth at an injury-riddled position.

Ihedigbo, 28, visited the Ravens on Saturday and agreed to terms Sunday morning, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

The Ravens have been seeking help at safety because of injuries to Emanuel Cook, who underwent surgery on his broken right leg and was placed on injured reserve, and Sean Considine, who has been sidelined since the third preseason game after suffering a pair of concussions within one week.

Ihedigbo is a 6-foot-1, 214-pounder who started a dozen games last season for the Patriots and recorded 69 tackles and one pass deflection. He’s also known as a physical special-teams contributor.

For his career, which includes three seasons with the New York Jets, Ihedigbo has made 118 tackles and five sacks.

(Update 9/3/12 :

The team cut third-year cornerback Danny Gorrer on Monday, making room for the recent signing of veteran safety James Ihedigbo.

Gorrer, 26, spent the last two seasons with the Ravens. He played in 11 games last season, mostly on special teams, and finished the year with three tackles and four passes defended. He finished this preseason with one interception, five tackles and two passes defended.)
