CHALK IT UP: KEY MATCH-UP’S

RAVENS FRONT SEVEN  VS: RB McCOY & QB VICK

In 2011 LeSean McCoy massed just over 1300 yards and had a 4.8 rushing average.  Do the Ravens stack the box and try to contain McCoy?  In doing so they leave themselves vulnerable to talented receiving corps with receivers DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and TE Brent Celek.  The Ravens defense had a dominating game versus the Bengals, however they allowed BenJarvis GreenEllis 91 yards on the ground—and that can’t happen again, especially against an elite running back.

QB Michael Vick not only has to be contained in the passing game, but he can’t be allowed to get outside the pocket. Vick is still a threat to run with the ball. Vick is coming off a tough game, 4 interceptions and 2 fumbles.  However, Vick should rebound playing on home turf.  The Ravens pass rush went dormant (a times) for a little while in Monday’s game. Baltimore’s defense will look to consistently find ways to disrupt the pocket.

RAVENS SECONDARY VS. WR JACKSON

Lardarius Webb will be the corner who likely covers DeSean Jackson. But, the Ravens usually keep Ed Reed or a safety around big play receivers.  Bottom line is Jackson needs to be limited and the secondary can’t afford to allow the speedy Eagles receiver to break away from coverage.  Ravens secondary did an excellent job containing the deep threat of A.J. Green in game one.

RAVENS O-LINE VS. EAGLES PASS RUSS

Lost in the Eagles bad season last year was the success of DE Jason Babin, who racked up 18 sacks.  Trent Cole, DE, had 11 sacks last season. In seven seasons Cole had 68 sacks.  The Ravens offensive line might need to bring in an extra blocker this weekend. The Ravens O-line had a surprise with Ramon Harewood at left guard, he’ll be challenged again in this match-up.

WR TORREY SMITH VS. CB ASOMUGHA

Great match-up. Nnamdi Asomugha is arguably the of the best corners in the NFL.  But, Smith’s speed is exciting, as witnessed Monday, and he’s worked hard on his route running this off-season.

RB RAY RICE VS. EAGLES LINEBACKERS

One thing that came away from the Eagles game in Cleveland is that Philly’s linebackers were stout against the run and the unit has speed. Out in the flat will be a challenge for Rice.  Running the ball will be key on the road against a formidable opponent.
