In the first of what could be many changes to the coaching staff, running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery has been relieved of his duties. Head Coach John Harbaugh said today, “Wilbert has decided to pursue other coaching and life opportunities.”
This move comes as a surprise as Montgomery has been apart of Harbaugh’s staff ever since the coach was hired to lead the Ravens. It is possible, though, that given the lack of success in the run game that Harbaugh decided it was time for a new a voice for running backs Bernard Pierce and Ray Rice, who have only ever had Montgomery as a coach.
This could be the first of a handful of decisions made on the offensive staff. The Ravens offense finished 29th in total offense this past year and it was clear that there were going to be some changes on that side of the ball. Montgomery is just the first coach to go, as I expect run-game coordinator Juan Castillo to be let go at some point this offseason as the Ravens try to fix their run game.
It will be interesting to see if Jim Caldwell gets an opportunity to be a head coach elsewhere next year or if he will be returning. If it is the latter, then I would expect Caldwell to try and bring in some of his guys to assist him in turning this offense around.
