Ravens Decline Option on DE Chris Canty

Chris Canty

The Ravens have declined the 2016 option for defensive end Chris Canty according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

The Ravens are purging their roster of veterans in an attempt to emerge from salary cap hell and free enough money to re-sign valued free agents like OL Kelechi Osemele and kicker Justin Tucker.

The 33-year-old Canty is one of the top run-stopping defensive ends in the NFL but comes with durability concerns, as he spent the last seven games of 2015 on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle and has not played a full 16-game regular season schedule since 2011.

The move frees up $2.15 million in cap room for the Ravens. Canty has toyed with retirement the past two offseasons but should have little trouble finding work if he chooses to play in 2016.
